Retail

• 99 Cents Only Stores announced it will begin liquidation sales at all of its store locations. The retailer named Chris Wells as Chief Restructuring Officer. Mike Simoncic, who has served as interim CEO, will step down.

• Batteries Plus LLC plans to open 39 new stores in 2024 in AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, MI, NV, NY, OH, PR, TX, and VA.

• Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. is planning to open at least 50 new store locations in 2024.

• GameStop Holdings Corp. announced that its COO, Nir Patel, is leaving the company.

• JCPenney Company, Inc. has opened a new store location at Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, NJ. The two-level, 120,000 sq. ft. department store is the company’s first new store in eight years.

• Koopman Lumber & Hardware announced that it is opening a new location in Pembroke, MA.

• Marc Jacobs reported it is opening a new store at Hudson Yards in Manhattan, NY.

• Nordstrom Inc. has named Lori Marten as Exec VP and GMM for Nordstrom Rack.

• Sam’s Club announced a new partnership with T-Mobile, which will become the retailer’s exclusive wireless provider.

• Uniqlo will open 11 new stores across Texas and California in 2024 as part of its plan to reach 200 stores in North America by 2027.

• United Hardware Distributing Co. and Do it Best Corp. announced their merger has been approved by shareholders.

• Vitamin Shoppe Industries is partnering with the Uber Eats to offer delivery from its stores across the U.S.

• KFC has named Alex Barsk as CFO.

• Marco’s Pizza has named Ben Halliwell as Senior VP of Digital Marketing, Tanisha Chea as VP of Brand Marketing and Kathleen Kennedy as Director of Culinary Innovation.

• Subway has continued their menu re-vamp by adding new wraps to all nationwide restaurants. All wraps are served a lavash-style flatbread, the company’s first new bread option in three years.

• Taco Bell is testing new Aqua Refrescas beverages as the company hope to compete with McDonald’s CosMc’s restaurant as a beverage destination.

• The U.S. Senate has voted to repeal the National Labor Relations Board joint employer rule that would hold franchisors responsible for the labor violations of franchisees. President Joe Biden has vowed to veto the measure.
