• National Grocers Association has promoted Chelsea Matzen to the role of VP, NGA Foundation.
• Sprouts Farmers Markets announced that its CFO, Lawrence Molloy, will retire at the end of 2023.
• T &T Supermarket Inc. reported it is opening a new 38,000 sq. ft. store in Kanata, ON, in the winter of 2024. The grocer also plans to open a new 39,000 sq. ft. store in London, ON, in the summer of 2024.
• Wawa Inc. reported it will expand its drive-thru store format to Florida with the opening of a new 2,036 sq. ft. location in Largo.
• Wegmans Food Markets Inc. will open a new location in New York City on October 18. The two-level, 87,500 sq. ft. store will be located in lower Manhattan.
• Zallie Supermarkets Inc. has promoted Anthony Massoni to President of the company. George Veit has been promoted to VP of Operations and Merchandising. The company also named Anika T. Parker its new Director of Human Resources.
Retail
• ABC Supply Co. Inc. has acquired Cedar Grove Roofing Supply in British Columbia, Canada.
• Beacon Roofing Supply Inc. reported that it has acquired All American Vinyl Siding Supply, in Tupelo, MS.
• CVS Health reported it is cutting about 5,000 jobs as it works to increase its focus on healthcare services.
• GameStop Holdings Corp. said that Diana Saadeh-Jajeh, its CFO, will resign on August 11. GameStop has appointed Daniel Moore, currently VP and Controller, as Principal Accounting Officer and Interim Principal Financial Officer, effective as of August 11.
• Nation’s Best Holdings LLC has acquired Cain Hardware & Lumber located in Carthage, TX.
• Primark USA will open its first location in the state of Maryland on September 7. The 36,000 sq. ft. store will be located in Hanover, MD.
• Rite Aid Corporation announced its Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Justin Mennen, has left the company.
• Sam’s Club reported it will open a new 300,000 sq. ft. distribution center in Oklahoma City, OK, in early 2024.
• Tractor Supply Co. said it plans to increase its annual new store openings to 90 beginning in 2025. The company is on track to open 70 new stores this year, and will open 80 new locations in 2024.
• Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. said that James Kehoe, Exec VP and CFO, will leave the company. Manmohan Mahajan, Senior VP and Controller, has been named Interim CFO.
• West Coast Lumber Inc. has acquired Stone Truss, a manufacturer in San Diego, CA.
Restaurant
• Back Yard Burgers has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This will be the second time the brand has filled for bankruptcy in the last 11 years.
• In-N-Out Burger has banned employees from wearing masks without a medical note in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Utah.
• Papa Johns has appointed Patrick Coelho as SVP of Development.
• PDQ has promoted Kep Sweeney to CEO where he succeeds co-founder Nick Reader.
• Shake Shack COO Zachary Koff will be stepping down as COO.
• The Cheesecake Factory has raised their prices by 10.5% since this time last year and the company plans to raise prices further before the end of the year.
• Virtual Dining Concepts and Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast) have entered into a legal battle over the latter’s claim that the MrBeast Burger restaurant is damaging his brand. Donaldson filed a lawsuit against Virtual Dining and the company is expected to countersue.
