• Aldi Inc. will open four new stores in MA, MI, MO, and NC, and relocate one store in MO this week.
• Delek US Holdings Inc. has hired Joseph Israel as Exec VP Operations and Logistics. Tommy Chavez was hired as Senior VP of Operations. Todd O’Malley, Exec VP and COO has left the company.
• Giant Eagle Inc. announced Bart Friedman has been named as Chairman.
• The Kent Companies has entered into an agreement to acquire Tom Thumb Food Stores Inc. The acquisition will include 14 Tom Thumb Food Stores and three Subway franchise locations.
• Murphy USA Inc. plans to open 45 new stores in 2023 and replace up to 30 kiosks with small, walk-in stores.
• QuikTrip Corp. has opened a new store in Clinton, MS, its first in the state. The company plans to open an additional five new locations in the state this year.
• Wakefern Food Corp. reported Mike Stigers will assume the role of President effective June 1. Current President Joe Sheridan will remain with the company through the end of the year to help with the transition.
Retail
• Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. is laying off approximately 1,300 employees over the next few weeks.
• Belk Inc. reported it is opening five new Belk Outlet locations this week in AR, GA, SC, TN, and VA.
• CVS Health expects to complete its acquisition of Signify Health this week.
• Dollar General Corp. has opened its first store location in Mexico, with a goal of 35 stores in the country by the end of fiscal 2023.
• Kodiak Building Partners and Barton Supply Inc. have promoted Cody Brooks to President of Barton Supply.
• Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics Ltd., Party City Holdco Inc. and Victoria’s Secret & Co. are all now offering online delivery via DoorDash.
• Macy’s Inc. announced that its Chairman and CEO, Jeff Gennette, will retire in February 2024. The retailer also announced that CFO Adrian Mitchell will take on the additional role of COO.
• Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Holdings will open 45 new locations in 2023. The retailer also announced it plans to open a new distribution center in 2024.
• Torrid Holdings Inc. will open 30 to 40 stores this year. The retailer also recently appointed Mark Mizicko to the role of Chief Commercial Officer.
• Uniqlo is planning to open around 20 stores a year in the United States, with a goal of approximately 400 locations in the next few years.
Restaurant
• Burger King is closing 26 locations in Michigan that belonged to franchisee EYM King. Burger King moved to terminate the franchise agreement after EYM King failed to pay royalties.
• Chicken Salad Chick has opened a new location in Greeley, CO.
• Chipotle has agreed to pay $240,000 to ex-employees of a store in Maine after the store was closed prior to holding a union vote.
• Crave Hot Dogs & Barbecue has opened a new location in Round Rock, TX.
• Denny’s Corporation will be launching a summit on April 22nd that will focus on mental health and wellness. The summit will be free and available virtually.
• Firebirds has been acquired by investment firm Garnett Station Partners LLC. The firm plans to accelerate the expansion of the restaurant chain.
• JINYA has opened a new location in Charlotte, NC.
• Mountain Mike’s Pizza has signed a development deal to bring five new locations to Las Vegas by 2027.
• Panera Bread has partnered with Amazon to allow MyPanera members to place orders via Alexa on Echo Show devices.
• Swig has named Jordan Hill as Senior Director of Development and Facilities.
