It’s been a busy week in the news for supermarket opening and closings. At Chain Store Guide, it’s our goal to keep our readers updated and our data on point so that you have the information you need when industry changes may affect your business.
Let’s start with Southeastern Grocers. The company announced last Friday that it will close 22 underperforming stores across the Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie banners by the end of March. Friday’s announcement follows a 2018 round of closings that eventually topped the 100+ unit mark.
In more positive news, Publix announced three more markets in which it will build a new GreenWise Market, the company’s specialty, natural and organic concept that first opened under its current look last fall in Tallahassee. Florida cities Odessa and Nocatee, along with Lexington, SC were announced, which brings total planned locations to ten.
In other expansion news, Wegmans will open its first store in Delaware in 2022. And finally, Ahold-Delhaize and Giant Food Stores got the okay from the FTC to acquire five Shop ‘n Save supermarkets across four states from Supervalu. The stores will close for a week at the end of March and reopen under the Martin’s banner in early April.
