In an acquistion expected to close in the first quarter, Ahold Delhaize and Stop & Shop are acquiring Long Island’s family-owned King Kullen Grocery Store Co., which lays claim to opening the first modern supermarket in the United States. With the deal, Stop & Shop takes possession of 32 King Kullen stores, 5 Wild by Nature locations and the company’s headquarters in Bethpage.

Stop & Shop has not committed to retaining the King Kullen banner. When asked about King Kullen’s future, a company spokesperson commented, “We’ll be evaluating stores and making those decisions in the near future.”

The Ahold Delhaize acquisition of King Kullen follows last week’s deal that saw Lidl purchase Long Island’s other independent grocery chain Best Market and its 30 stores.
