Cell phone and wireless providers continue to swim against the trend of retail store closings, and AT&T has just upped the ante. The company recently announced that it would open 1,000 new company store locations by the end of 2019. The new-location count consists of pop-up stores in urban environments within non-traditional properties like apartment buildings, mobile units and traditional storefronts.

Chain Store Guide data shows that, in the first half of 2018, more than 1,800 new retail locations were opened under the auspices of the top four wireless providers in the US, a number which includes both company-operated stores and authorized retailers.

AT&T led the pack in the first half with more than 800 associated store openings, including 150+ company-operated AT&T and Cricket Wireless locations. Within that context, the 1,000 new company store locations AT&T plans to open is even more striking.
