Five Below continues to expand. The company closed 2017 with 625 stores, having grown by 103 net units, or 19.7% on the year. For 2018, the plan is 125 stores.
The states with largest number of new stores on tap include California, Florida and Texas. In California, where Five Below opened its first store in spring 2017, the chain will nearly double its store count from 15 to 28 stores. On this year’s list of firsts is Arkansas, where the company will open at least 5 stores. Real estate requirements for all of these news stores are 8,000 to 10,000 square feet with a minimum frontage of 55 feet.
Unlike some retailers that pull back at this stage of the growth cycle and settle on 100 units a year moving forward, Five Below seems intent on maintaining an annual growth rate of 20%. At that rate, the company will open its 1,000th store by 2020, as detailed below.
