It’s no secret that Target is struggling. The retailer readily admits that it’s in the early stages of a multi-year effort to right the ship. We illustrated one symptom of the struggle in last month’s Discount Dashboard, four straight quarters of negative comparable store sales, a state of affairs that’s expected for the remainder of fiscal 2017. But following on a better-than-anticipated Q1, last week’s big reveal of four new in-house apparel brands – A New Day, JoyLab, Project 62 and Goodfellow & Co. – due in-store this fall, is another step forward. The company hopes that phasing in these brands (and phasing out the likes of Merona and Mossimo) will help turn the tide in apparel sales, which saw its first decline in years in 2016.
