By all accounts, Indianapolis-based Marsh Supermarkets is wrapping up business as an ongoing concern. After closing its 30+ instore pharmacy locations in April and holding another round of supermarket store closings in April and May, Marsh announced that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 11. Without a buyer for its remaining stores within 60 days from the filing, the one-time regional mainstay has stated that it will close its doors.

With 120+ stores in Indiana and Ohio when the then family-operated company was sold to Sun Capital Partners in 2006, the company stands to shutter the 40+ stores that remain open. The map below charts the Marsh closures over the past 11 years.
 

Kroger, Whole Foods and/or Giant Eagle are expected to fill a number of the resulting vacancies in the greater Indianapolis market and beyond should Marsh close its stores. Giant Eagle is a new presence in the Indianapolis market, having opened a Market District concept in nearby Carmel, IN in late 2015.
