With 1,500 North American locations and the largest chunk of market share among pet retailers, PetSmart is trialing the viability of a smaller space while testing demand potential for a number of services within its first PetSmart Pet Spa concept located in Oceanside, NY (529 Atlantic Ave.).
Current plans for the PetSmart Pet Spa stores call for footprints averaging 5,000-8,000 sq. ft., compared to the industry-leading 26,000 sq. ft. that the company currently seeks for its standard big box locations. That footprint is approximately half that of fellow 1,500-unit retailer Petco (averaging 12,500 sq. ft.) and more in line with the preferred square footage of ‘next tier’ competitors such as Pet Supplies ‘Plus’ (8,500 sq. ft.), Pet Valu (2,000-4,000 sq. ft.) and Pet Supermarket (6,000 sq. ft.). Within this relatively smaller space, the PetSmart Pet Spa includes a self-service dog wash, a new grooming salon design, a coffee bar-lounge area and retail space focusing on upscale pet food and nutrition needs.
PetSmart has yet to announce plans for future locations.
