Harris Teeter’s newest example of its ‘large format’ store debuted in grand fashion in January. The company’s new Pinehurst, NC location is its largest ever, checking in at 78,200 square feet. The in-store features are incredibly expansive, and go far behind the realm of traditional supermarket service offerings.

Standout features include a meat smoker inside the ‘Butchers Market’, a walk-in humidor, and a wine/beer bar with 16 selections of beer on tap, along with a growler station. Health-conscious shoppers can visit the juice bar in the ‘Farmers Market’ or fill up a soup cup at the bar in the Fresh Foods department. The store also features a Starbucks and sit-down eating area. Outside the store, a five-station fuel center is staffed daily during peak hours.

Since being acquired by Kroger in 2014, the two companies have swapped ideas for store amenities and services. Harris Teeter is facing intense pressure within in its operating markets, especially from aggressive expansion by leading Southeastern grocer Publix Supermarkets.

Data from Chain Store Guide’s 2015 Grocery Industry Market Share Report demonstrates Harris Teeters strong presence in numerous North Carolina markets. Prior to opening the new location, the company’s two locations in the Pinehurst micro core-based statistical area (CBSA) placed it third in grocery market share. That’s sure to change this year after the opening of this latest food superstore.
