Think lay-offs, lawsuits, store closings, and negative feedback. Unfortunately, I am referencing Haggen Inc. Last year, the company acquired more than 140 stores from Albertson/Safeway and was given a tight period in which they had to remodel the stores to the Haggen brand. This would be a feat for any company nevertheless a company with only 18 stores. As the conversions rolled out, the negative feedback started coming in. Customers weren’t seeing improvements, besides more expensive products and a new sign. This summer it was announced that Albertsons would be suing Haggen for millions of dollars’ worth of unpaid inventory. To make matters worse, it was reported that the company is laying off more than 331 employees including some with disabilities and this week the company announced it will be closing 27 of its underperforming stores and more in the future.

While all of this negative press gives a dismal outlook for the company, it still might have a fighting chance. At the end of the day, it all comes down to execution.
