Personnel Updates:

Cardinal Health named Michael Kaufmann as CFO and Jon Giacomin to the role of CEO of the Pharmaceutical segment.

Diplomat Pharmacy announced the addition of Martino Luu to their senior leadership team as VP Innovation and Process Improvement.

Fred’s Inc. named Jerry Shore CEO of the company. Shore’s promotion follows the notification by Bruce Efird of his intention to leave the company.

The Katz Group Canada Ltd. announced Frank Scorpiniti has stepped down as CEO. The company expects to soon announce its new CEO. In the meantime, Warren Jeffery, COO, will assume day-to-day operating responsibility for the business.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced Sara Rubin has joined as Manager, Pharmacy Care.

Rite Aid announced that RediClinic CEO Web Golinkin will assume additional responsibilities as the CEO of Health Dialog. Golinkin succeeds Robert Mandel, who has resigned to pursue other interests. In addition, Rite Aid’s group VP Pharmacy Initiatives and Clinical Services Karen Staniforth has been promoted to the role of COO at Health Dialog.

Financial Focus:

Cardinal Health reported fiscal year 2015 first-quarter revenue of $24.1 billion, representing a 2% decline from the year-ago period.

Industry Insight:

The Bartell Drug Company plans to open a new 14,000 sq. ft. store in 2016 at Ballard Commons in Seattle, WA.

CVS Health officially announced plans to create a new Digital Innovation Lab in Boston and revealed that it recently completed the opening of a new Digital Experience Center at the company’s headquarters in Woonsocket, RI. It is recruiting new talent for both locations. The new 15,130 sq. ft. center, located at 116 Huntington Ave. in Boston, will serve as a vital hub for the growing CVS Health Digital team, which will remain headquartered in Woonsocket. The new CVS Health Digital Innovation Lab can house approximately 100 employees, with 90% of them anticipated as new hires.

CVS Health announced that it has entered into new clinical affiliations with three regional health systems — Baptist Health System in Alabama; Community Health Systems affiliated hospitals, which include Commonwealth Health in Pennsylvania, Northwest Medical Center, including Oro Valley Hospital in Arizona and Tennova Healthcare in Tennessee and Premier Health in Ohio.

CVS Health opened its first MinuteClinic locations in Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

CVS Health announced the kickoff and major expansion of Project Health, its annual free health-screening campaign, at select CVS/pharmacy locations. Over the next four months, the Project Health wellness program will deliver more than $14 million worth of free health services to multicultural communities with a significant number of uninsured or underinsured individuals across the United States. More than 1,000 Project Health events will be held at select CVS/pharmacy stores in 27 markets.

Target Corporation is teaming up with Kaiser Permanente to open four in-store Target Clinics in Southern California, taking a host of services directly to thousands of customers. The clinics opened at Target stores in Vista, San Diego and Fontana, and a fourth clinic will open in West Fullerton Dec. 6. They will be staffed by nurse practitioners from Kaiser.

Real Estate:

Walgreen Company opened its first location in the state of Alaska. The store will wait to hold a grand opening until February 2015, when a sister store in East Fairbanks opens. The company also announced it opened its first Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy in the Omaha, NE market.
