One of the most prolific multi-concept operators in the North American restaurant industry, MTY Food Group currently operates and franchises nearly 2,600 restaurants under the following banners: Tiki-Ming, Sukiyaki, La Crémière, Au Vieux Duluth Express, Carrefour Oriental, Panini Pizza Pasta, Franx Supreme, Croissant Plus, Villa Madina, Cultures, Thaï Express, Vanellis, Kim Chi, “TCBY”, Yogen Früz, Sushi Shop, Koya Japan, Vie & Nam, Tandori, O’Burger, Tutti Frutti, Taco Time, Country Style, Buns Master, Valentine, Jugo Juice, Mr. Sub, Koryo Korean Barbeque, Mr. Souvlaki, Mucho Burrito, Extreme Pita, PurBlendz and ThaïZone. These restaurants generated combined sales of $725.8 million in 2013, compared to $688.7 million in 2012.
The vast majority of the company’s growth has come through the acquisition of other single- and multi-concept operators across Canada. Its financial success owes to its ability to select qualified franchisees — less than 1% of the total restaurants are corporate stores and only 10% of total revenue is derived from those locations. Long a powerhouse presence in Canada and second only to the mighty Tim Hortons in number of locations, MTY recently expanded its operations into the U.S. through the September 2013 acquisition of Extreme Brandz and its Extreme Pita, Mucho Burrito, and PurBlendz brands.
MTY Food Group specializes in fillings spots in food courts, shopping malls, and store-fronts as well as co-branding in convenience stores, theaters, and other non-traditional venues. In addition to franchising, other revenue sources include distribution of raw products to certain of its concepts and food processing which generates revenues from the sale of ingredients and prepared food to restaurant chains, distributors and retailers. MTY has also recently licensed the retail sale of Thai Express and Thaizone products in grocery stores.
The company’s focus this year remains on the continuous improvement of operations, on opening new locations of existing concepts and on developing its brands locally and internationally. It has also not ruled out additional acquisitions if they become available.
