A publicly traded company, Kirkland’s was founded in 1966 by Carl T. Kirkland. Mr. Kirkland served as the company’s first President and CEO from its founding until 1997 when he relinquished the presidency. In December 2004, Mr. Kirkland stepped aside as CEO and Chairman of the Board and has been Chairman Emeritus ever since.
No one should doubt the influence Mr. Kirkland continues to exert over the company, years after his retirement. Mr. Kirkland maintains a key seat on the board of directors and continues to lead key corporate committees. His lengthy, updated company summary, A Note from our Founder, warmly greets investors and shoppers alike on the corporate website.
The company has struggled a bit, like most others through the recession. Prior to the recession, the company was opening stores at a healthy moderate pace, adding about 30 locations a year. Between 2007 and 2009, the company experienced consecutive years of net losses in store totals, going from 349 to 279. More recently the company has experienced modest growth in locations.
Despite this somewhat rough picture, the company has handled recessionary economics rather well. After continuous years of consistent pre-recession annual sales increases, the company experienced just two years of negative sales totals. The first, at the start of the recession, indicate a negative of eleven percent. During the next year, the company suffered its second consecutive and thus far last negative in annual sales, a mere 1.4 percent.
