Kohl’sFounded in 1962, Kohl’s is now America’s fastest growing department store. Kohl’s began by challenging both discount chains and full-service department store retailers with a unique formula of value pricing for name-brand apparel. While some stores are located in enclosed shopping malls, the majority of Kohl’s stores are free-standing. The most noticeable distinction between Kohl’s and the traditional department store format is that all Kohl’s stores have centralized checkouts found at the front entrance to the store. Kohl’s initiated the use of a racetrack aisle that circles the entire store, a technique borrowed from discount stores but rarely used in department stores.

CSG 80 YearsThis year, Chain Store Guide celebrates its 80th anniversary. In honor of this occasion, we are hosting a monthly series of editorials called “Chain Store Guide Through The Ages”, starting with the 1930s. We will take a look at what was happening in that time and how it affected the industries we now serve. Our Company Snapshots will examine companies from that period and see where they are today.
