Bartell Drugs opened its 61st location this August, and it’s not your everyday drugstore. Sure, it’s located in a high-energy Seattle neighborhood. However, the new store still pushes the boundaries of what traditional pharmacies look like. Everything from the unique product mix to its beer-growler program, Bartell truly opened a location to fit its surroundings.
Inside the store, merchandise offerings include a wide selection of locally produced and organic products, enhanced lineups of energy and nutrition bars, and its ’99 beers’ department – a selection of beers in 99 different package combinations. Perhaps most interesting is its new ‘growler’ program. Bartell will be unveiling South Lake Union Growlers (S.L.U.G.), a new offering that will enable customers take out half-gallon growlers from a selection of six rotating taps. Other store features include a selection of Northwest wines and premium liquors, and enhanced pet-related items to accommodate owners in the highly pet-friendly area.
The new store in South Union is located a street away from the company’s original headquarters established on Boren Ave., which Bartell used until 1985. In the Seattle core-based statistical area (CBSA), Bartell has a strong presence and goes head to head with two of the nation’s largest drug store chains. It holds strong as the #3 pharmacy operator in the market based on prescription-drug market share percentage.
