Save Mart opened its first store in Modesto, California on January 17^th, 1952. According to the company, it was one of the first supermarkets to offer customers pre-packaged meats, yard and garden supplies, plants, fresh-cut flowers and gift item. In the 1950’s, these were innovative concepts for supermarket chains and relatively unheard of for the California area until Save Mart introduced them. Today, the company has grown into a 226-unit multi-billion dollar supermarket chain.

This year, Chain Store Guide celebrates its 80th anniversary. In honor of this occasion, we are hosting a monthly series of editorials called “Chain Store Guide Through The Ages”, starting with the 1930s. We will take a look at what was happening in that time and how it affected the industries we now serve. Our Company Snapshots will examine companies from that period and see where they are today.
