Personnel Updates:

AmerisourceBergen elected Lon Greenberg, 62, to its board of directors, effective immediately. Greenberg fills the vacancy created by Charles Cotros’s retirement from the board in February 2013.

Rite Aid announced the election of former Blue Shield of California president, chairman and CEO Bruce Bodaken. Bodaken, 61, spent 18 years working for the San Francisco-based company before stepping down in 2012 as president, chairman and CEO, a position he had held since 2000

Industry Insight:

Rite Aid introduced wellness65+, an extension of its customer loyalty program wellness+. Qualified customers can enroll at any Rite Aid store on online at the company’s website

Mergers and Acquisitions:

Bartell Drugs has increased its store count by two following the purchase of two pharmacies. The Seattle-based regional chain announced the purchase of the pharmacies — in Everett and Marysville, Wash. — from The Everett Clinic. Bartell will begin operating them on June 10, bringing its total number of stores to 60.

Real Estate:

Kroger is looking to open six additional Little Clinic locations within its stores in Ohio this summer and plans to expand its relationship with Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center.

Green Initiatives:

Walgreens will install solar systems at 200 stores across several states, bringing its solar-powered store total to about 350. The solar arrays are designed by Chicago-based solar developer SoCore Energy, which will own, operate and maintain them. The newest installations will be in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.
