Hi School Pharmacy’s original store opened in 1925, and was named Hi School Store due to its location across the street from Vancouver High School. In 1939, two brothers, Ken and Matt Zapp, opened a pharmacy in the old Safeway building adjoining the High School Store. This doubled the size of the original store and greatly increased the variety of merchandise offered. More importantly, Hi-School Pharmacy, as it was duly named, became known as the place to have prescriptions filled.

1930s Drug StoreBeginning in the 1980’s, the company began adding hardware stores under the True Value and Ace Hardware names. Some of these stores are still in existence today.  In 2003, the company sold 16 locations to Walgreens, including its original pharmacy location in downtown Vancouver. Currently, the stores feature their own private label offerings under the Premier Value name.  Other services include online prescription refills, the LifePics personalized photo printing and formatting service and a broad range of hardware and home goods at most store locations.

CSG 80 YearsThis year, Chain Store Guide celebrates its 80th anniversary. In honor of this occasion, we are hosting a monthly series of editorials called “Chain Store Guide Through The Ages”, starting this month with the 1930s. We will take a look at what was happening in that time and how it affected the industries we now serve. Our Company Snapshots will examine companies from that period and see where they are today.
