J.C. Penney announced that the chain was replacing its outdated technology infrastructure with an Oracle-based system, and, beginning this fall, would start to test the use of RFID tags on store merchandise. Other planned enhancements include the use of self-checkouts and mobile checkouts. The retailer will implement Oracle Retail applications for merchandising operations management, merchandise planning and optimization, supply chain planning and execution, and Oracle Retail’s stores solutions to simplify processes, reduce layers and equip business teams to better shape assortments and respond faster to customer preferences. Also, J.C. Penney’s new Levi’s shops will have iPads for customers to use for online browsing and for salespeople to check out customers. J.C. Penney hopes to get rid of cashiers and cash registers by 2014, and instead have salespeople use iPod Touch devices to check out customers, or self-checkout lanes.

Starbucks Coffee Co. announced the continued global expansion of the Starbucks mobile platform with the roll-out of Starbucks app for Android to the United Kingdom and Canada. The company also announced that it will use mobile payment company Square to process all U.S. credit and debit card transactions, beginning this fall.

Wendy’s has announced that it has selected Boingo Wireless Inc. to manage and operate Wi-Fi services at participating Wendy’s company restaurants in the U.S. and Canada.
