The first Heinen’s store was a small meat market opened in 1929 by Jeff and Thomas’ grandfather Joseph Heinen. Today, the company has evolved into 18 gourmet supermarkets, most offering in-store cheese shops, specialty foods, private label organic products, and expansive wine selections.

Heinen’s recently opened a new store in Barrington, Ill in August 2012, marking the chain’s first venture outside northeast Ohio. Jeff and Tom Heinen, who own the 82-year-old Cleveland-based company, said they plan to open multiple stores in the greater Chicago area. The 38,000-sq. ft. store will feature nearly everything the company’s Ohio stores do, but it will not offer parcel pick-up service.
