Having recently celebrated its 100thanniversary, the iconic grocery retailer is focusing on food innovation and in-store service for the future. Store enhancements include higher size standards for quality produce, fresh sushi and prepared foods counters, prepared seafood selections, and beer departments featuring local breweries and a ‘make-your-own’ six pack display. New training for store employees is also being introduced.
The company announced at its most recent annual shareholder meeting that it plans to invest $125 million in growth – a 25 percent increase compared to 2011 – which includes two new stores and 18 major remodels. In addition, it expects to soon complete the purchase of three Genuardi’s units near Philadelphia that will reopen later this summer. President David Hepfinger said the company has upgraded two-thirds of its store base over the past three years.
Weis is seeking sites for these new store locations throughout markets in MD, NJ, NY, PA and WV. The company will also consider existing or redeveloped shopping centers. A land area of seven to 10 acres is required.
The company has also been active on the ‘green’ energy front. Two Weis Markets’ stores received a “silver” certificate from the EPA’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership for meeting tough benchmarks on cutting refrigerant emissions that harm the Earth’s protective ozone layer and contribute to global warming.
