OfficeMax is the seemingly perennial number three of the three top national office supply chains, at least in terms of sales volume if not in perception.   While Staples aggressively fights the retail battle in the heart of major metropolitan areas and Office Depot often concentrates on more midlevel territories, OfficeMax locations can often be found in less populated areas.  The three directly and indirectly compete in select metro areas but each has carefully cultivated its preferred niche of real estate holdings.

Office supply retailing has found the economy as challenging as just about any retail market in recent years.  The harshness of the recession has resulted in cutbacks in most business segments.  Naturally, this has lead to a diminished demand for office equipment and supplies.

Recently, OfficeMax announced plans to reduce its retail store count during 2012.  The company plans a net reduction in retail store count with up to 35 store closures and one to two store openings in the United States, as well as eight to nine store openings and one to two store closures in Mexico.  As many retailers are reducing retail footprints either by reducing the size of prototypes or through reductions in store count OfficeMax seems to be in step with the trends of the times.
