A few months ago I wrote an Insight about Google Wallet and the future of mobile payments and I asked if consumers and retailers/restaurant operators are on board for mobile payments with a cell phone. The answer is that they are years away from acceptance on a broad scale for several reasons, but retailers and restaurant operators are beginning to implement the technology at a much more rapid pace than originally thought. The following are a few retailers and restaurant operators that recently announced they are accepting Google Wallet in select locations.

Jamba Juice is supporting Google Wallet at 270 of its approximately 750 locations, including units in the Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Washington D.C. markets.

Jack in the Box is promoting Google Wallet use at 35 restaurants in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas.

Peet’s Coffee & Tea has partnered with Mastercard and Google Wallet to provide near-field technology payment options at its company-owned stores.

Gap Inc. stores, including Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, are now accepting Google Wallet payments at 65 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company is also offering a 15% discount off purchase for customers that use the technology through February 2012.

Although it’s years away from broad implementation, the growth so far has been quick. Google has partnered with major companies like OfficeMax, Macy’s, American Eagle Outfitters, and Foot Locker to offer the solution. Companies like Chevron, Pinkberry, and Subway will offer Google Wallet in the near future.
